The Company

Biônica Filmes was founded in 2012 by Bianca Villar, Fernando Fraiha and Karen Castanho, and is dedicated to telling great stories through audiovisual media.

With 18 films and 4 series produced, their most recent releases in cinemas were “Toll” (2023) by Carolina Markowicz and “Welcome, Violeta!” (2023) by Fernando Fraiha. “Toll,” a co-production with Portugal, was premiered at TIFF, where its director received the "Emerging Talent" award, and has already been featured in 16 international festivals – including San Sebastián and the Rome Film Festival – accumulating 10 additional awards. In 2022, Bionica released the series “Mônica and Friends - The Series” on Globoplay, a live-action adaptation of Brazil's most popular comic book, and are preparing for the production of the second season in 2024.

Over these 12 years, they have attracted more than 6 million viewers to cinemas in Brazil, reaching the top of national box offices three times with: “Men Are from Mars... And That's Where I'm Going!” (2014), “Monica and Friends - Bonds” (2019), and “Monica and Friends - Lessons” (2021). Navigating through different film genres, the production company aims to produce meaningful projects that move audiences and connect with a diverse range of viewers.

Consistently present at festivals, they have received 64 awards at over 60 festivals. Notable among these are TIFF, San Sebastián, SXSW, Brooklyn Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, Rome Film Festival, Stockholm International Film Festival, Festival do Rio, and the Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro.

Biônica is currently finalizing the latest feature film by renowned director Anna Muylaert and the live-action adaptation of the character Chuck Billy from Maurício de Sousa Produções. The company has over 10 projects in development, including "Secret Dinner" by Fernando Fraiha, based on the book by Raphael Montes, and “Like a Kite” by Allan Deberton, the director of the award-winning “Pacarrete.”
